Amanda Phillips, M.Ed. Talent Development (2017-2018)
Mentoring Matters Graduate Research Assistant
Amanda served as the Graduate Research Assistant for the Mentoring Matters program. Amanda proudly hails from Aggie Land (Texas A&M University, College Station, TX) where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Sciences with a minor in Creative Studies and certificates in Youth Development and Leadership Excellence. She recently completed a Masters of Education at Texas State University, majoring in Secondary Education with a focus in Talent Development and a minor in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE).
Amanda has a diverse background and experience in talent and leadership development. She as a member of the infamous Corps while at Texas A&M. At Texas State, she has participated in a number of leadership institute activities to include Leadership, Capstone, workshop series, film series, and so on. She served as Student Programming Director for the Texas State’s Student Leadership Board. She has attended various departmental development workshops, including Brilliant Bobcats, PACE-CAFÉ, and Career Services. Through the graduate college, she has earned two certificates of completion for attending Shop Talk series.
Izzy Deleon, M.S. Biology (2017-2018)
Graduate Program Facilitator: STEM Student Learning Communities (STEM SLC)
Izzy is a graduate of Texas State University. He completed a Master’s in Biology focusing on science education research under the tutelage of Dr. Julie F. Westerlund. His thesis research looked at Latino parent’s attitudes towards science and involvement in their children’s science learning. He also holds two bachelor’s degrees from Texas State University, a B.M. in Music Performance and a B.S. in Biology. As a graduate STEM student, Izzy taught the lab portion of the undergraduate genetics course at Texas State University. He also served a lab supervisor for the genetics lab. During his undergraduate years, he served as a peer mentor for three years through the PACE Center. He is certified as a Level III Master Mentor by the College Reading & Learning Association. He was also a undergraduate research assistant (URA) under Dr. Kristy Daniel, whose research focus is in biology education.
With the Mentoring Matters program, Izzy used his experience as a peer mentor and research assistant to assist in the development of the undergraduate peer mentors. He facilitated the STEM Student Learning Communities (SLC) and presented for HSI STEM High Impact Program, offering diverse training in Multicultural Career Development. Dr. Joslyn Johnson is the Assistant Dean of Career Education and Associate Director of Career Catalysts at Stanford University’s Career Center, BEAM (Bridging Education, Ambition, and Meaningful Work). Joslyn received her
PhD in Education- Adult, Professional, and Community Education from Texas
State University in 2017. She holds a M.A. in Human Resources Development
from Midwestern State University and a B.A.A. in Broadcasting and Cinematic
Arts from Central Michigan University. As Asst. Dean, Dr. Johnson primarily focuses on developing strategies that ensure students have equitable opportunities through career programming at the intersection of diversity, inclusion, and belonging. She has an established history of pioneering programs that champion diversity, education, and student development. Her doctoral research focused on how life-wide learning experiences served as shaping factors in the career success of high potential young adults.
